Discover the microplastic pollution effects on our health and the environment!

For each purchasing choice, it is important to know the source of what we are consuming. This is essential, so we can know if we are helping disastrous impacts on the environment or not.

The very first step lies in building awareness and willingness to change. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s find out everything about microplastic pollution and how the textile industry can have a huge impact on the environment.

Microplastic pollution: tiny plastic, big problem

Do you know what happens to products that have not been disposed of correctly when they arrive in nature? They fragment into small plastic particles that we usually refer to as microplastic. This microplastic that goes to the ocean comes from the inadequate disposal of packaging, the escape of landfill containers, the washing of clothes made of plastic fibers, the escape of primary plastic material such as nurdles, among other things.

Due to the abundant use of plastics in all sort of forms and uses, we have as a consequence microplastic pollution in the oceans. Its residues become present in the air we breathe, in foods, and even in the water, we drink. The journal Environmental Science & Technology conducted a survey that suggests that an adult consumes 2000 microplastics per year. Can you imagine?

A risk to the health of biodiversity

Environmental Systems Research Institute at the University of Osnabrück in Germany made a research where it points out that this type of material has the ability to absorb toxic products found in the oceans such as pesticides, heavy metals and other types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which means that the damage to the health of biodiversity is much greater.

Planktons and small animals feed on contaminated plastic and, when eaten by larger fish, spread intoxication. At the end of the chain, when humans feed on these larger fish, they are also ingesting the plastic and the pollutants that have accumulated along the chain.

Regarding the problems related to POP, there are various types of hormonal, immunological, neurological, and reproductive dysfunctions associated. Plastics may even contain bisphenol, which is known as endocrine disrupters that are very damaging to human and environmental health.

The environmental costs of fast fashion

The textile industry causes environmental impacts, depending on the type of textile fiber. However, even if there are different types and levels of impacts, there are always environmental impacts involved.

The fabrics have very different natures. Here are the most common fiber types:

  • Natural fibers: cotton and wool;
  • Artificial fibers: viscose, bamboo viscose, and lyocell/Tencel;
  • Synthetic fibers: nylon and polyester.

Knowing the impacts of each type of textile fiber is essential to make the choice that best fits your profile. It is also important to prolong the useful life of the clothing and minimize the impacts on the environment.

A significant part of garments is made up of synthetic fabrics like polyester. The problem is when we wash polyester in a washing machine, it exacerbates another global problem: ocean plastic pollution.

Every time we wash polyester, the microplastics detached and pass through sewage and wastewater treatment plants into waterways and eventually the ocean, where marine life ingest it.

All in all, textile production is one of the world’s dirtiest polluters and fast fashion is costing the earth!

So, what can you do about it?

Do it with a purpose! Be a conscious consumer and avoid synthetic fibers. Go green and choose sustainable brands like MARIALMA®! Our process avoids overproduction and waster and only uses natural and artificial fibers.
