Did you know that there are around 600 different species of Eucalyptus worldwide?

In Portugal, the most common species of Eucalyptus is called Eucalyptus globulus, which comes from Tasmania and Australia.

It is a large tree, with a height that can reach 70 – 80 m in old adult trees and it prefers humid temperate climates. This species barely supports shading, but tolerates all types of soils, with the exception of limestones. The name of Eucalyptus Globus is due to its fruits resemblance to clothing old buttons.

One of Eucalyptus’s primary uses involves the production of wood for cellulose pulp. In fact, Eucalyptus is a tree that serves multiple purposes and virtually all have a profitable destination: from its wood to its flowers, leaves, and bark. Eucalyptus’s wood is suitable in different forms, both as solid and as a raw material for the pulp industry.

Eucalyptus has superpowers!

Its bark and wood exude a red substance, similar to gum, called keno, which primary function is to protect the wood from maggots. This gummy substance is also used in many medicines ingredients that help stop bleeding. Also, the bark of Eucalyptus is used to tan leather and dye fabrics.

The leaves of the Eucalyptus have an essential oil called cineol or eucalyptol that has balsamic and antiseptic properties. It is widely used in the manufacture of perfumes and soaps, medicines and cleaning products. It is also used, in the form of infusion or sweets, against bronchitis and phlegm. Alternatively, it is possible to boil a set of leaves in water and inhale the vapors.
