Technological advances in the textile industry

New uses, the IoT and the development of sustainable materials are increasingly present in fashion, sports, uniforms, and objects. Also, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and sewing robots are already changing production processes in the textile industry. But, wait… What exactly can they do?

  • Sewbots: Robots with machine vision software, which act in the handling of tissues, increasing traditional production. They help in the making, labeling, inventory control, and many other features, bringing more convenience to companies.
  • 3D printing: By using this technology in textile manufacturing, you can reduce significantly waste material disposal and produce custom parts.
  • Energy reuse: Fabric manufacturing applies to energy sustainability.

A great example of this evolution are, for example, some smart clothes and accessories made with fabrics and technological materials. These materials are capable of capturing solar and kinetic energy to feed the wearable’s installed in the fabric weft. For example, in the biomedical field to monitor people’s health you can also use technology. In sports, there is a plot movement with sensors that monitor physical exercise, like an artificial intelligence personal trainer. An outfit with this fabric can inform, in real-time, if the user is gaining muscle mass or working it correctly. It can also inform if the intensity of the training is by the desired goal.

How technology is redefining fabric

We are also starting to see more frequently the introduction of nanotechnology in fabrics. Different studies of manipulation of matter through molecular or atomic particles are made in the textile chain, to apply, implement or to fuse elements to yarns and fibers to create new fabrics or enhance existing ones.

This technology allows the creation of parts suitable for certain functions. Besides offering more security, the famous smart fabrics, are softer, thinner and with a better fit, and can also give repellent fabrics, UV protection products, and flame retardant fabrics. These smart fabrics are what we can call performance fabrics.


But after all, what is a performance fabric?

Performance fabrics are textiles that provide added benefits. In Marialma’s case, our fabrics are extra smooth, relieve skin diseases, they are thermal controller and odor-reducer. There are two different processes that generally origin performance fabrics:

  • Coated fabrics – created by applying a coating to a piece of ordinary fabric. The coating may be an inexpensive means of enhancing such properties as water repellency and ease of cleaning. However, while these fabrics may look and feel stylish, their performance features will diminish over time (with every wash and use) and their range of performance characteristics will be limited.
  • Engineered Fabrics – they are typically entirely engineered to meet a set of specific requirements such as abrasion resistance, fade resistance, ease of cleaning, etc. Fiber composition, yarn construction, weaving techniques, and finishing applications all play a part in how well the fabric will endure in a stressful environment. Engineered performance fabrics can be more expensive than alternatives. However, it offers the best value and the fewest compromises between durability and aesthetics.

The entire production process since the spinning of the yarn is thought to add these specific benefits by ensuring that their properties are permanently preserved over the lifetime of the product, regardless of multiple washer rounds.
