Sleeping is not only a pleasurable body function, but it is in fact an imperative need. Our co-founder reflected on the importance of sleep.
We spend a third of our “trying” to sleep. Nevertheless, sleep was regarded as a waste of time throughout the ages, which had an impact on most societies, where people, nowadays, suffer from a restless and disturbed sleep.
DID YOU KNOW?
In the 4th century B.C. – The Greek philosopher Aristotle (384 B.C.-322 B.C.) recognizes that sleep is a vital necessity. He was wrong only in thinking that it was caused by the heart, not the brain.
There are numerous scientific studies and researches that alert to the relationship between bad sleep habits and health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, anxiety and burnout. Nowadays it is known that the hours we spend asleep shape not only our mood, but also our motivation and decision-making ability.
According to Sleep Council’s statistics, it is estimated that we sleep on average one to two hours less than in the 1950s. So, we don’t sleep well enough to be efficient at work or more attentive and patient in our relationships with family and friends.
The Internet has changed our way of communicating, consuming and working. Also mobile phones, which soon became indispensable objects in our daily lives, expose many people to their blue light.
Increasingly, countless triggers don’t let us fall asleep when we were supposed to. Sleep deprivation has become a global epidemic and must be combated. Fortunately, from every major problem opportunities arise, and the shared concern of individuals, companies and governments has caused sleep-focused businesses to grow and prosper. Today, there is more and more information, applications, services and accessories focused on improving the quality of life.
The price to be paid for the deprivation of rest is very high all over the world. A recent OECD study shows that in the US economy the costs exceed 300 billion euros (data for 2018). In the UK, the bill was around 42 billion
According to the Rand Europe Research Institute, small changes can have a huge impact on the economy. If, for example, people who usually sleep six hours a night would spend seven hours a day resting, that could mean an increase of 192 billion euros in the US economy.
Perhaps, due to this type of economic consequences, the relevance of sleep quality has increased significantly and has become a business and fashionable topic! Trendy topic or not, we’re strong advocates of a good night’s sleep.
The idea of making Marialma’s project a reality was very motivated by the desire to develop a daily product with high added value. We wanted to incorporate real health and wellness benefits in common products, using recent technologies that would ensure long-lasting benefits and products.
We decided to leave our corporate careers to implement a business that would make a difference and positively contribute to society. In our personal lives we had long felt the need to effectively apply the standards of the slow living philosophy and to exchange the hustle and bustle of a professional career for quality of life. For us everything begins with a good night of sleeping.
