1) Tidy up all at once

If you want to apply the KonMari method, you need to take an entire day to tidy up. Get rid of all the junk you have at home and do not divide this task for several days. Take a day off from work during the week or do it in the weekend, but make sure you do it all at once.

2) Before you start organizing, you have to discard

The first step is to throw away what you no longer need. According to Marie Kondo’s cleaning tips, you should only proceed for the tidying up part once this step is completed.

3) Tidy up by category, not by location

Join all objects of the same type instead of arranging by divisions. This means tidying up all the things in the same category in one go. For example, when tidying the clothes category, the first thing you should do is to gather every single item of clothing from every room of your house in one spot. This will help you to see objectively exactly how much you have of one category.

4) Follow the right order

The KonMari method says it is crucial to follow the correct order, which is clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellany), and finally, sentimental items. Why this order? Because clothing is the least emotional category, and by the time you work your way up to the personal item’ category, you will be more confident in your decision-making ability.

5) Ask yourself if it sparks joy.

The criterion for deciding what to keep and what to discard is whether or not something sparks joy. Marie advises to ask yourself, with each object in your hand, “Does it bring me joy?”. If we only keep things that bring us good feelings, it will be more pleasant to put them in order and keep the house tidy.

6) Avoid the intrusion of relatives.

KonMari method points out that loved ones – especially parents – can be very anxious about the number of things we are getting rid of. They will often try to save things from the pile of items we are scrapping, even if they have no real use for them. At the very least, they will probably make you feel guilty.

7) Use technology to your benefit

Yes, we know that sentimental items can be the most difficult part, because as much as we want to forget some awkward times of our lives, we don’t want to get rid to all of our memories. So, why not use technology to your advantage? Scan all your photos and old cards into Google Photos, and voilà. The photos will be accessible and won’t take up space.

8) Say no to special or expensive storage items

All you need to tidy up the house are drawers and boxes, preferably transparent so you can see what’s inside. Never, but never pack in opaque bags.

9) Fold your clothes in the right way

10) Transform your bedroom into a spa-like sanctuary

According to the KonMari method, your bedroom should be an exclusive space to recharge and unplug and that light can play an important role in creating a relaxing and peaceful room. Therefore, the lighting should be soft, so you can include natural candles or even add a dimmer to your light switch.

11) Wash your sheets weekly

One of the most important Marie Kondo’s tips to organize your bedroom is to wash your sheets weekly. Why? Simple! Because a clean room is a happy room. Washing your sheets will not only reduce unwanted bacterial elements but also reduce stress and promote good mood.
