We know you don't feel like celebrating your hot flashes, insomnia, dry skin, and night sweats. But World Menopause Day is important to promote dialogue between women and doctors about menopause symptoms. Let’s talk about it!

Menopause is a scary word because it simply means the end. It’s the end of a woman’s childbearing years, brought on by the ovaries gradually slowing down. It’s the end of menstrual periods for 12 straight months, without other obvious causes. It’s the end of fertility and youth days. But has this to be this way?

In fact, menopause is a turning point, not a disease, but it can have a big impact on a woman’s quality of life. That’s why World Menopause Day is so important. It was created to encourage women to embrace all changes happening in their body and look for specialists that can help them manage this phase of their lives more easily.

So, today we will talk about menopause and how important it is to prepare women for this new cycle. If you’re curious, scroll down to find out all about it!

A New Beginning in a Woman's Life

Although menopause can bring physical discomfort from hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness and other symptoms, it can also be the start of a new and rewarding phase of a woman’s life – and a golden opportunity to be conscious about major health risks like heart disease and osteoporosis.

The way menopause can be perceived is culturally shaped. In societies like Japan where age is more respected and the older women are considered wiser, menopausal symptoms are significantly less disturbing. Many Japanese women reported no symptoms besides their periods stopping and did not think of the menopausal transition as a particularly difficult time. The Japanese language does not even have exact translations for words like “menopause” and “hot flash.”

In contrast, where being old is not seen as an advantage, many women associate menopause with symptoms that can much more devastating. Indeed symptoms referred by middle-aged women are very discrepant: 85 percent of American women, but only 12 percent of Japanese women, reported hot flashes.

Menopause can be a new beginning. The end of the road is not there yet, and life to come is certainly worth living.

Top Tips for a Healthy Transition

And what a better day than World Menopause Day to share with you some tips on how to maintain a healthy life while in menopause? Check them out below:

1) Maintain a healthy body weight and eat food rich in calcium and vitamin D in order to decrease the risk of osteoporosis.

2) Stay calm and meditate – it will help you to reduce stress and give you a good night’s sleep. It will also improve bone density, prevent fractures and also helps in flexibility and balance.

3) Sleep at least 7 hours a day – if you can’t catch some Z’s, speak to a psychologist about insomnia or a sleep specialist about apnea.

4) Drink water frequently – in this phase, women often experience dryness. This is likely caused by a decrease in estrogen levels.

5) Get regular exams – mammograms, pap smears, transvaginal ultrasound and bone densitometry;

6) Dress in layers, which can be removed at the start of a hot flash;

7) Quit smoking – it makes every other health issue worse;

8) Stay cool at night with menopause friendly bed sheets. When you spend the entire night sweating, the last thing you want is to add hotter sheets to the bed, right? Make your menopause symptoms a bit easier to survive by investing in bed sheets that are comfortable, fresh, and skin-friendly. For this reason, Marialma’s bed sheets offer all these benefits and many more. You may sweat, but you won’t stay wet.
