As electricity hadn\u2019t been invented yet, people had little or nothing to do after sunset.\u00a0<strong>So they slept<\/strong>. Over the next couple of weeks, they started to<strong>\u00a0have a segmented sleep schedule<\/strong>, like the one, observed in people from the 15th century.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p>Not only they had the same\u00a0<strong>sleep schedule<\/strong>, as they felt more relaxed. In that sleep interval, the body released prolactin, the same hormone that is released right after the orgasms.\u00a0<strong>So, the sleep science wasn\u2019t hard to define!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"empty-space empty-quart\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"heading-text el-text margin-top-xs\">\n<h3 class=\"h3\"><strong>Modern-day sleep science<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p><strong>In this day and age, our sleep schedule is very different<\/strong>. It is the direct result of the industrial revolution where a workday can last 16 hours, which diminishes the amount of time people can<strong>\u00a0sleep.<\/strong>\u00a0Even\u00a0<strong>taking a nap during the day<\/strong> can be frown upon or seen as \u201cnot very productive\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p><strong>According to our sleep science today, the number of people relying on sleeping pills has increased over the years<\/strong>\u00a0and anxiolytics that help people unwind and go to sleep are one of the most prescribed. The trouble is:\u00a0<strong>they all cause addiction<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe pharmaceutical industry has yet to develop an efficient and risk-free drug. But there\u2019s new hope in the horizon, a drug that inhibits the production of hypo creatinine, the neurotransmitter responsible for the<strong>\u00a0sleep-wake cycle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"empty-space empty-quart\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p><strong>Instead of inducing sleep,<\/strong>\u00a0this new drug simply cancels out the substance that is keeping you awake. However, this miraculous drug still awaits FDA approval.<br \/>\nUnfortunately,\u00a0<strong>there is no perfect solution for the lack of sleep<\/strong>. When there is a rise of melatonin you start feeling sleepy and that usually comes after sunsets. On the other hand,\u00a0<strong>when melatonin levels are low you wake up<\/strong>, which usually happens in the mornings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"empty-space empty-quart\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"heading-text el-text margin-top-xs\">\n<h3 class=\"h3\"><strong>Then there was technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p>Nowadays, there\u2019s is something messing up our levels of melatonin:\u00a0<strong>the variety of screens we are subjected to through the course of the day<\/strong>. That can disrupt our internal rhythm as our brains can\u2019t distinguish between night and day with the same ease, s<strong>o we struggle to fall asleep.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p>The best you can do to regulate your melatonin level \u2013 rather than take melatonin pills, which can have several counter effects such as changes in your menstrual cycle \u2013 is to control your exposure to light after sunset, so that means you have to cut the screen time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37984\" src=\"https:\/\/marialma.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/screen-iphone-1000x584.png\" alt=\"screen iphone\" width=\"1000\" height=\"584\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p>A shortcut that can have the same effect is to<strong>\u00a0adapt the light of your electronic devices,<\/strong>\u00a0for instance, in the TV you can choose the mode \u201cCinema\u201d where the light is warmer and there\u2019s also an app for Mac and PC to help you regulate the intensity of your screen light.<br \/>\nBut if you still toss and turn after following all this advice, don\u2019t worry sometimes it is normal,\u00a0<strong>however, if this happens every night, you need to see a specialist or change your routine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"heading-text el-text margin-top-xs\">\n<h4 class=\"h4\"><strong>\ud83d\udca1 Did you know what happens in your body while you sleep?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p><strong>Mouth:<\/strong>\u00a0The saliva production drops and you have that dry mouth feeling. That is just the right environment for bacteria to spread, hence your morning\u2019s bad breath.<br \/>\n<strong>Skin<\/strong>: When you are sleep deprived, you can experience an outbreak of oily skin and pimples due to the rise in cortisol levels. While the cortisol rises, other hormones like collagen drop. As the latter is responsible for keeping your skin clean and healthy\u2026disaster can happen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"uncode_text_column\">\n<p><strong>Brain:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s cleaning time. Dead cells and beta-amyloid protein molecules are removed, the accumulation of which can lead to memory loss.<br \/>\n<strong>Muscles:<\/strong>\u00a0The release of growth hormones occurs, which among other functions helps to repair muscle fibres.
