Wood-based paper only came into use when mechanical and chemical pulping was developed in the mid-1800s, in Germany and England.\u00a0Today, at least 95% of paper is made from wood pulp.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The oldest surviving paper has more than 2.000 years. It comes from China and was made from\u00a0hemp fibre<\/strong>. Egyptian papyrus sheets that were once thought to be the oldest form of paper are not actually \u201cpaper\u201d. Experts understand this term as fibre strands that are woven instead of \u201cwet-laid.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Eastern Societies Traditions with Hemp<\/b><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The\u00a0Hmong<\/em>\u00a0are one of China\u2019s largest minority ethnic groups (they are known as the Miao in China) and they can also be found in Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. \u00a0According to their tradition, they must be buried in hemp garments<\/strong>. They believe that their ancestors will refuse the dead person\u2019s soul in the afterworld if they are not wearing hemp clothes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Each child must give their departed parent trousers or a skirt in this material for the burial clothes, so the deceased may be buried in as many sets of clothing as there are sons or daughters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

There were several Japanese martial\u00a0artists, including Samurai warriors, who used to dress with this fabric<\/strong>. The reigning Sumo champion had to carry a\u00a0giant hemp rope<\/strong>\u00a0around his stomach\u00a0to purify the fighting ring and drive away evil spirits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In eastern societies, hemp garments<\/strong>\u00a0used to be a symbol of wealth, exclusively worn by wealthy Japanese. A Yukatabira\u2014absorbent bathrobes made of this fiber\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014were put on after bathing in hot springs. The cotton kimono was the common person\u2019s version of these expensive bathrobes. In Japanese traditional marriages, it\u00a0was also a symbolic gift of acceptance and obedience<\/strong>\u00a0from the groom\u2019s family to the bride.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Western Society Tradition with Hemp\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Reminiscent of the Chinese tradition of using hemp as burial garments, in\u00a0Norwegian<\/strong>\u00a0tradition, it\u00a0<\/strong>was used to make clothing for both births and burials, as they\u00a0symbolized the beginning and end of life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Historical documents in the western societies used to be made of hemp.\u00a0The first and second drafts of the American Declaration of Independence were written on hemp paper<\/strong>. The final version was copied onto animal parchment and signed on August 2, 1776.\u00a0The Magna Carta and the King James Bible were also written on hemp paper.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hemp was so important in England<\/strong> in the sixteenth century that King Henry VIII (1491\u20131547) passed an act in 1533 that fined farmers who failed to grow hemp. Overseas, in colonial America, citizens of several colonies were also required by law to grow hemp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
