Seaweed is the basis of marine life and a variety of algae. Essential for the maintenance of ecosystem services, it contributes significantly to the planet oxygen’s production.

Seaweed can be used in many products and it has a significant role in the global economy. Famous in Japanese cuisine, through sushi, its value is priceless to humanity. Contrary to what we have heard, forests are not the planet’s only lungs. Algae produce about 55% of all oxygen on Earth.

But the benefits of seaweed don’t stop there.

It’s Good For Your Health

Seaweed is a very beneficial plant for our health, since its nutrients and properties can help prevent cancer and treat skin and hair diseases. They are rich in nutrients such as iodine, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and iron and they contain vitamin K, which is anti-hemorrhagic and improves the health of the gastrointestinal system.

There are 2 substances found in several seaweed species that have antioxidant and photoprotective characteristics. They are (i) carotenoids (organic pigments) and (ii) mycosporins (a type of amino acid). With these substances, it is possible to produce natural sun filters and antioxidants, which combat free radicals that can cause various health problems, including oxidation and skin ageing.

How Marialma Uses The Seaweed Power

Marialma was created to incorporate technology in everyday products. As a Portuguese startup, the sea plays a preponderant role in our education and costumes.

It was our goal from the very beginning to use the best that the sea offers us and that is why we chose to use in our yarn, a fibre so well achieved and highly reliable called Seacell. The result is MARIALMA® Cosmetic Algae.

Did you know that Seacell is an Austrian-made fiber produced by embedding dried, crushed seaweed into cellulose fibres, using nanotechnology?

The benefits of our fabrics

Fabrics that are 100 per cent biodegradable, made in an innovative and environmentally friendly way as our nature-based production method virtually meets the highest standards of sustainability and quality.

Then, the magic happens. The natural moisture released by the skin, when in contact with the fabric, triggers a simple reaction producing an active exchange between the seaweed extract embedded into the fibers and the skin. The skin absorbs the essential nutrients, which helps the whole body to benefit and to feel good.
